The quarter in one number: 49.3. That was the average of our daily Ethereum Whale Sentiment Index across July, August and September 2026, on a scale where 50 is neutral.

We track 20,000+ Ethereum whale wallets and score their combined flow every day on a 0–100 Whale Sentiment Index (50 is neutral). Over the 92 days from July 1 to September 30, the index averaged 49.3 — almost exactly neutral — while swinging between 17 and 89.

Sentiment: three months, three moods

Month Average Range
July 52.6 17–85
August 46.4 20–89
September 49.0 17–76
  • 40 days closed at 50 or above; 52 closed below.
  • The quarter's high was 89 on August 26; the low was 17, hit on both July 22 and September 13.
  • September closed at 21, well below neutral.

A neutral average hides the spread: the quarter covered almost the whole scale, from 17 to 89.

DEX swaps: August was the busy month

These are real trades on decentralized exchanges made by tracked whale wallets:

Month Swaps Wallets DEX buys DEX sells
July 7,427 198 $26.2M $20.4M
August 10,957 310 $188.4M $133.2M
September 12,960 255 $148.2M $139.7M

Swap count rose every month, but the dollar volume peaked in August. In September, buys and sells were nearly balanced ($148.2M vs $139.7M).

September exchange flow: dollars left exchanges

Exact exchange-flow data is kept for 30 days, so the exchange numbers below cover September 6–30 only.

  • Stablecoins: tracked whales withdrew $2.20B of USDC from exchanges and deposited $415.6M. For USDT it was $1.35B out and $687M in.
  • Directional tokens: $688.8M withdrawn vs $340.2M deposited — a 66.9% withdrawal share. LINK, UNI, QNT and ONDO each had $37M–$45M net leaving exchanges.
  • 97.4% of all whale-scoped dollar volume was exchange transfers, not trades. We wrote a separate study on why that matters: 97% of whale flow is exchange transfers.

Coins leaving exchanges is conventionally read as accumulation-side flow, and arriving coins as distribution-side flow. Those are labels for past movement, not forecasts.

What we changed during the quarter

The tracked universe was rebuilt around real holdings: admission now requires at least $250K in holdings, and market-maker and exchange-desk wallets were removed. That makes the numbers above closer to what actual large holders did, rather than what infrastructure wallets shuffled.
